First of all its easier to understand the terminology of t5 and t8. The “T” standard for tubular and indicates that the tube is indeed tubular, the number following the “T” indicated the thickness or diameter dotlight of the tube light in eighths of an inch.
NOTE: First of all, the t8 led tube light is only a tube, there is no fitting that comes with it – we sell and manufacture this item for retrofitting purposes i.e. take out your old and put in the new. The t8 led tube light comes with its own starter and depending on the type of ballast you have may need a small re-wire.

I was putting up another light source in my basement greenhouse and discovered that my T12 bulbs don't fit. The light is mounted in the ceiling and now I'm wondering if the T5 will work for reaching the floor. This particular light isn't necessarily for orchids, more for my other tropicals. But since I don't understand the difference in the bulbs, I am wondering if I am even using the right light for my orchids, lol... Any info that can help me to distinguish the difference between them would be greatly appreciated. Thanks euli in advance.
The main difference has to do with the diameter of the tube and as a result a T5 holder and a T12 are different. Due to the way that the lights work a T5 can produce more light. euli __________________ Orchids: The more you acquire the more you desire
Interesting you brought up the question--I was just trying to figure out the same thing and doing some research. If you are interested in getting into the LED scene and already 5500k have a T5 or T8 fixture, check out these new LED bulbs from Orphek. The new LED bulbs are designed to fit directly 5500k into standard T5/T8 fluorescent fixtures with no additional equipment required.
Orphek (an Advanced Aquarist sponsor ) announced yesterday the introduction of a new T8 form-factor LED tube that, with the provided adapter, will fit into a standard T5 fixture. These new bulbs will be available in 24, 36, and 48 lengths and no additional power source will be required - the LED tubes will run off of the T5 fixture. The new bulbs are reported to produce 500 lumens per foot, which is ~ 100 more lumens per foot compared to a standard fluorescent bulb.
