This is a one of the most incredibly detailed 3D model printed I have ever seen! These pictures show a mechanical 3D printed car or octopus 'octopod' created by Sean Charlesworth, and printed in the Objet Connex500 multi-material 3D printer.
(Seam Charlesworth): My graduation was in Film & TV and I spent the last 10 years repairing cameras and equipment for the New York University. I recently finished a master's degree at NYU in Digital Imaging and Design with an emphasis on 3D modeling and printing. The 3D printing really attracted me since combined hands to work and physical objects with digital design. The fact that I could build something like this, with virtually no tools, molds and machines was exciting.
(SC): At the time I was planning lighting magazine an underwater lighting magazine digital scene for a lighting exercise and wanted to include some objects. I am a hard surface modeler and would not feel comfortable fighting creatures so decides to make some kind of vessels but did not want a typical submarine, etc. I'm a big fan of Nautilus sub "Disney 20,000 Leagues lighting magazine Under the Sea" because he had an animal look like really keeping up mechanics. Using this as a stepping stone I came up with the Octopod and tried to design it to be as practical as possible to be fantastic. The underwater scene never materialized, but I ended up using the idea for my thesis.

Since my background is in modeling for the entertainment industry I was using 4D and Maya Cinema, which are probably not the best choice to design something so mechanical. I knew CAD would probably be a better choice, but wanted to stay with what I know and also do not have time to learn something new. This made things more challenging, but it was a valid workflow, as many different sectors are using 3D printing now.
Every bit of mechanics to work out, the tentacles were by far the most difficult and the most necessary tests impressions. I knew the tentacles had to really come alive or model would be a flop. I rejected for several reasons traditional joints printing and ended core with a flexible rubber material such as Tango Objet fusion joints and rigid to Objet Vero it for details. I modeled lighting magazine a small shaft down the center and inserted metal armor wires then to the tentacles could be placed dramatically. It took about four versions to get it right. lighting magazine
(SC): I found the Objet Connex be great for this project because of multiple materials. Although the ABS-like Digital Material would have finally been the best choice structurally, I do not want to deal with painting lighting magazine the model. I chose to do more than with the materials in black and white Vero since I could digitally mix them and have something that looked great right out of the printer. lighting magazine I was also very happy with the resolution and accuracy of parts.
I have to thank the NYU Advanced Media Studio to help me with this complicated project. I was lucky that I could sit down with them and discuss solutions and workflows one-on-one. I think with 3D printing reach the masses we need to see more services like this that can guide you through the process.
Sean Charlesworth (SC): I'm thinking of republishing some parts improved for Octopod and adding some details that I do not have time initially. After I'd like to do a project using the material as ABS-Digital and try some different lighting magazine finishing and painting lighting magazine on it.
