Cheap, reliable and energy efficient fluorescent tube is most common and most popular lighting fixture. There are various types of tube light fixtures available in the market these days like T5, T8 and T12. They come in different sizes, different wattage and lumen output.
The physical difference: Since these fluorescent lamps are in tube form so they have been given a ‘T’ in their name which straight away tells that the is a tubular in form factor. Then next comes the diameter of this tube. This diameter is measured can lights in 1/8th of an inch. T5 is 5/8 part of an inch in diameter can lights and same way T8 is full 1 inch in diameter.
Difference in ballast: The operating frequency of T5 is more than 20 KHz. Due to this high frequency, human eye is not able to detect this flicker which puts less strain. T5 use electronic ballast which does not produces any noise or hum. They instantly get switched on as no starter is required and produces almost negligible heat.
Light Output: The light output in T5 and T8 tubes is almost same. Since T5 consumes lesser energy as compared to T8, lumen per watt is higher in T5. T5 tubes retain their light output for longer than T8. Even after 8000 hours of usage, T5 tubes can emit roughly 95% of their peak performance when they are used first time. On the other hand T8’s light output falls to 88% after 8000 hours of usage.
Cost of replacement tube: T5 tubes are still newer as compared to T8 tubes. The cost of manufacturing is also much higher in case of T5. You can easily find a T8 tube (6500K) for roughly Rs.45-, however for a T5 rod, you will have to shell out minimum Rs.100- depending on what brand you are buying.

For T5 LED you can simply opt for Philips can lights Linea. This comes in 1,2 and 4 feet. It is an excellent product. I have seen others also like Havells but Philips Liena is far superior in build and light quality. The price is Rs.990 for 1 feet, Rs.1700 for 2 feet and Rs.2400 for 4 feet.

Just need to have some info regarding LED lights which has now become a hot thing in our lives..I remember when we were in school(in 80s) and making science projects we used to use Red Green Yellow LEDs which were termed as Light Emitting Diodes. Then why this technology can lights took so long to come into the form of basic lighting. Is this technology so complicated that it took decades ? and also why the price is so steep for a common man. Is this because its new in the market or indeed the production cost is high ?
You remember the computers used to be without any hard disk and we used to boot computers using 1.2MB floppy disks? can lights The CPU was few MHz in our 286/386/486 computers! Even in 1993-94 4MB RAM in a computer was a big big thing. Can you feel the difference between can lights then and now?
