Title: True Grit. (English title: True Grit). Author: Charles Portis. Editorial: oligo calc Debolsillo. Pages: 202. ISBN: 978-84-9908-733-7. The recent film adaptation of this classic western by the Coen Brothers has allowed me to approach this extraordinary story, which even managed to reconcile with a genre (and room) to not sticking me for years, which is not Got otherwise great Cormac McCarthy's Blood Meridian. The plot of the novel will be known to many fans of the genre, especially for the film adaptation starring John Wayne in 1969: Mattie Ross, a fourteen-year contract to marshal Rooster Cogburn to find and bring to justice Tom Chaney (if that's his real name), the cowardly murderer of his exemplary father. But the story is not a succession of adventures, oligo calc not one of those collections of "things-that-should-go-to-book-like-this" in which some current selling converted. It is the story of a strong and determined will, embodied in a girl with some stupid story in her own after many years, and converted into a self-maid. The original title, True Grit, does much more justice to the character. In fact, a title like "What to have" or simply "Courage of Truth" would, plus more faithful, more suitable. Cogburn would guess if it would have been removed in his grave at the tendency to translate the titles freely: the second film with Wayne as Alive, Rooster Cogburn (1975), resulted in Spain as The Rooster Cogburn. Returning to the novel, is an agile story, peppered with pithy monologues Mattie, who looked at reality oligo calc in all its rawness but remains committed. In fact, it is a person whom we might call particularly upset by his perseverance, determination, courage, virtues that many consider admirable, but can often cause boredom and envy in others. If the character Mattie is the most feature is only because we have already written enough and well Cogburn, a "hero", gray, drunk, quarrelsome, violent, evil at times and honorable in others. Capable of both admire people like William Quantrill as exhausting to death a pony to save the life of a nosy girl. The translation I read, by Eduardo Mallorquí at the time, is decent, with some notes on characters or western slang words that help make sense of this. There are a couple of minor errors: the first, where, unlike in other successful cases, paraphrase does not translate the story of Martha and Mary in the New Testament, the second dictionary marshal, in itself a difficult word, as commissioner, rather than as sheriff. A highly recommended novel, which you can buy at a good price and it certainly is a classic not so much of the West as human nature.
"True Grit" is a great novel in general and in particular, a great historical novel. It takes us back to the true "Wild West". Portis oligo calc overboard this work. If you want to read more details on this, take a look at number 9 "The anti-historical novel" and also to No. 1. Especially "Alcolea". Reply Remove
