The illuminated boat procession, or â Lai Ruea Faiâ festival, is a tradition of the northeastern people. The age-old event is the local custom of paying homage to the Lord Buddha. It also marks the end of the Buddhist Rains Retreat.
According to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), the festival originally included very small boats made of banana tree trunks or bamboo that were illuminated with candles and lanterns and decorated with many lit joss sticks before they were launched into the Mekong River. Today, the boats are much more extravagant pagazzi and the ancient rite has turned into a competition. The festival also includes long boat races during the day and fireworks pagazzi at night.
